Downtempo gem 'Flame of Mine' by UK artist Subverse gets a synth-packed indie disco makeover from New York dance music mainstays, The Phenomenal Handclap Band.
Founded by Al Pascal and Maddy Collins, Subverse is a North London music project built on a love of blending genres. Drawing influences from soul, r&b, pop, house, indie and electronic music, the project takes a song-first approach to bringing different musical styles together.
Now led by musician, producer and educator Al Pascal, co-founder of house music duo The Layabouts, Subverse draws on more than 30 years of Al's experience as a performer, songwriter and producer, bringing together influences from across both song-based and electronic music
Subverse has always been rooted in themes of self-reflection, growth and navigating life's challenges, and ‘Flame of Mine' emerged as the song that best captured that spirit. Built around the idea of keeping your inner spark alive, the track is about finding the strength to put one foot in front of the other, stay resilient and keep moving forward, even when the path ahead feels uncertain.
Having previously worked together on the promotion of Subverse's ‘Set Free' release, Al spoke with Will Sumsuch at Colour & Pitch about potential remix collaborators. The Phenomenal Handclap Band quickly stood out as the perfect fit. Their organic, analogue-led production style and eclectic musical influences aligned closely with the ethos behind Subverse. Daniel Collás took the track in a new direction, adding his own creative touch while preserving the heart of the song, resulting in a remix that feels both distinctive and true to the original.
