Andrew Emil, Glass Slipper, Claude Young - Incidental Introspection

Andrew Emil and Glass Slipper join forces with Claude Young for timeless and soulful EP ‘Incidental Introspection', issued on Colour and Pitch.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Colour and Pitch is delighted to welcome back to the label Austin duo Glass Slipper (Lisa Cork-Twiss and Brad Eller) and Chicago producer Andrew Emil, alongside a label debut from an all-time musical hero of ours, Detroit’s own Claude Young Jr.

Ranging from 80’s-tinged boogie to House, ‘Incidental Introspection’ cooks up a truly singular, timeless fusion for 2024 and beyond. Slinky mid-tempo opener ‘Fade Out’ summons up retro Miami beach feels, while Lisa’s stunning vocal deals with the very modern issue of social media burnout.

‘Dancefloor Paramour’ keeps the grooves languid, while Lisa’s layered and reverb-drenched vocal summons up a dream-like and fleeting late-night encounter. Instrumental House cut ‘Unclaimed Restraint’ rolls effortlessly with a fat bass-line and dreamy classic chords.

Crushed, off-kilter drums and sparse chords introduce ‘God Only Knows’, before Lisa’s voice expresses both personal and universal existential questions like a mournful gospel confessional. Finally, Brad re-imagines ‘Dancefloor Paramour’ as a slick Disco House number, somewhat reminiscent of classic early Crazy P or Ray Mang productions.

“This EP was finished right before Covid hit in 2020 but feels timeless and I’m so excited to have it finally see the light of day” says Lisa Cork-Twiss. Andrew Emil continues: "Claude and I had been friends for some years through our work together creating sample packs, content, videos and editorial during my days directing the digital category at Reverb. We wrote all the track skeletons during a weekend in 2019 when Claude was staying with me in Chicago, and I finished up the tracks before I sent them off to Brad and Lisa of Glass Slipper to check out. They really loved three of them, and right away recorded their contributions and sent them back. I mixed them down and they added their remix, and there this project was.” Brad concludes: “The base tracks Andrew and Claude created were very inspiring, and Lisa never ceases to amaze me with her songwriting. I feel very lucky to be a part of this talented cohort.”

Glass Slipper - Am I Alone

Fresh from successful releases on Large Music, Foliage and Papa Records, Austin duo Glass Slipper return to Colour and Pitch with slinky soulful cut ‘Am I Alone’.

Recording and performing live together since 2013, Glass Slipper comprises the powerhouse former Real McCoy vocalist Lisa Cork-Twiss and veteran Bay Area producer Brad Eller, both now residing in Texas.

An ode to those sleepless existential moments we’ve all experienced from time to time, ‘Am I Alone’ is clean and smooth-grooving honest-to-goodness Soulful House track, with a slightly swung ‘Dark’ mix for the dancefloor, and a straight-up melodic ‘Light’ mix for the warm-ups and terrace sessions.

“Right away, the chord progression, felt wistful and melancholy and I immediately knew Lisa would be able to write something to it” says Brad. “I'd rather play a handful of deliberate, strong parts than have a million little weak things going on all at once. This also provides an uncluttered sonic canvas for Lisa's vocal- especially her big harmonies and fat background stacks. For the dub, I double-timed a few select vocal hooks, fed them into the sampler, and got jiggy with it.”

Says Lisa: “’Am I Alone’ was written during a bout of insomnia. One of those nights when my brain just wouldn’t shut off. The state of the world was laying heavy on my mind as I pondered the question, am I alone?”

Finest Wear - Night Tales

Colour and Pitch favourite Finest Wear returns to the label with a three track EP packed with dancefloor attitude, entitled Night Tales.

With hot releases on Nite Grooves and Nordic Trax to his name, Finest Wear has made several appearances in the Traxsource top 100 Deep House artists list, and with good reason.

His last EP on Colour and Pitch, ‘The Terminal' was a storming success thanks to lead track ‘Go Deeper', and how he returns to us with with a somewhat tougher, peak-time offering.

'Push Me' sets out the stall nicely, with rolling drums and blunted synth giving way to a tough bassline and a subtle vocal hook.

Techno-influenced ‘Ket Corner' was titled after a group of youngsters the producer spotted, possibly enjoying themselves a little too much, during an outdoor event in the Oxfordshire countryside… Let's just say, it's aptly named.

'The Buzz Dub' returns to the familiar Finest Wear sound, with classic Deep House chords and an effortless groove backing the eerie swarm of synth-wasps trying to escape from the speakers.

Glass Slipper - Love is Feeling

Texas duo Glass Slipper return to Colour and Pitch, with a special House remake of the 1977 Eloise Laws classic 'Love Is Feeling', with a remix from Sumsuch.

"Eloise, Ronny and the Laws Family were musical royalty in Houston, where I grew up" says vocalist Lisa Cork-Twiss. "This was one of my favorite songs from her album "Eloise". Brad sent me an instrumental track he was working on and I immediately started humming "Love is Feeling" to it... I'm paying tribute to my roots with this adaptation."

The other half of Glass Slipper, producer Brad Eller, provides a crisp, clean, acid-tinged House music backdrop for 'Love Is Feeling', as well as turning in a hypnotic Dub version and an instrumental.

Colour and Pitch founder Sumsuch steps up to deliver a raw, atmospheric and spacious Deep House version of 'Love Is Feeling', putting Lisa's powerful vocal up front and adding just a touch of jazz in the breakdown.

'You Could Fly' is typical of the duo's warm, human, song-based brand of electronic music, with soaring vocals and sparkling piano from Brock, matched with lyrical guitars and smooth production from Sumsuch.

Hot on the heels of his landmark 2021 album 'Anywhere Here' on Nordic Trax, Irish producer Gavin Boyce turns in a typically deep, understated yet intricate revision of 'You Could Fly', slowing the tempo and squeezing even more emotion from Brock's vocals.

The Self Help Group - Temple OS

Brighton alt-folk band The Self Help Group's touching and unique song ‘Temple OS' gets the remix treatment from Gavin Boyce, Grottoes, Rosko & Sumsuch and Eric Shans.

The original song, written by Brighton musician Mark Bruce, founder of The Self Help Group, is inspired by the strange and tragic story of Terry A. Davis. Davis began programming the ‘Temple OS' computer operating system in 2005 after a series of visions in which he claimed God had instructed him to build ‘the Third Temple', as prophesied in the Bible.

Reunited for the first time since their 2009 low-key underground hit ‘Latenite Bypass' on Urban Torque, Rosko & Sumsuch turn in an acid-tinged, string-laden, extended rework of the song, putting Mark's powerful vocal out front and dubbing the song out in the second half.

Off-kilter electronic music hero Q-Burns Abstract Message unveils his brand new Grottoes alias for a meditative, ambient ‘Reversion' of ‘Temple OS', layering guitars over airy synths to build up a densely textured soundscape.

With an album coming soon on Nordic Trax, Irish producer Gavin Boyce delivers a potent and haunting House ‘2MB Distro Mix' of Temple OS, sure to provide many a transcendental dance-floor moment when the clubs finally re-open.

Colour and Pitch regular and 3Bridge Records co-owner Eric Shans stays true to the original version, adding subtle electronic melodies and shimmering chords to delightful effect.

Finally, The Self Group provide an alternate rendition of ‘Temple OS', transforming the song into a languid and warm synth-pop gem.

Following up his 2017 'Rhythmic Indulgence' EP, Tim Tonal returns to Colour and Pitch with the stunning 'Switchback' EP, complete with remixes by PJ Principle and Wolf Hackmine.

DJ and producer Tim Barnett, aka Tim Tonal, has a rich history in the UK electronic scene, having released on the iconic DiY Discs both as part of Tonal Fusion and one half of Alpha Dogs. Switchback showcases Tim's impressive production chops with a classy and expertly constructed House groove, carrying just enough dance-floor weight and acid power to nod to his background in the rave scene. A darker, dubbier, stripped down second version, Switchback II, is also included for the late night heads.

Fellow DiY Discs graduate PJ Principle provides Switchback's first remix, imbuing the track with a timeless Deep House vibe and offering up a nimble, airy arrangement, plus sumptuous analogue sounds galore.

Glass Slipper - Momentary Joy

Following a series of scintillating live shows in their hometown of Austin, producer/vocal duo Glass Slipper return to Colour And Pitch with new single ‘Momentary Joy’, featuring a remix by Chicago’s own Andrew Emil.

Smooth, soulful house with powerhouse vocals by Lisa Cork-Twiss, ‘Momentary Joy’ calls for a life beyond the day-to-day grind, while classic chord stabs and an M1 organ bass-line propel the track into dance-floor territory.

Andrew Emil remains the only recording artist to produce simultaneously for Derrick Carter’s Classic Music Company, Mark Farina’s Great Lakes Audio, Gene Farris’s Farris Wheel Recordings, and Steve “Silk” Hurley’s S&S Records. Put simply, Andrew Emil is firmly entrenched among Chicago’s House music elite and we are delighted to welcome him to Colour and Pitch for the first time.

Andrew’s ‘Dreamix’ combines hard-hitting drums, subtle jazz-tinged percussion and a hypnotic bassline, washed over by lush pads and atmospherics. For those who prefer their house a little stripped back, Emil’s ‘Dreamstrumental’ dub will definitely hit the spot.
